The “Upper house” will be renovated and will become a construction site in the next three years. Parliamentary business therefore takes place at several locations in the Democracy Quarter. The substitute session room was set up in the large Redouten Hall of the Hofburg. Selberherr GmbH, a company from Schwechat/Lower Austria specialising in interior design, was commissioned with the construction of the interior.

In order to be able to meet the tight installation time of three months, Selberherr GmbH pursued an ambitious schedule and elaborate production methods. The substitute plenary hall was set up in a hall in Enzersdorf an der Fischa, dismantled again, transported to Vienna in individual parts and reassembled on site. The construction took place in three stages. “Thanks to the modular design, it was guaranteed that the work could be completed in the short time available,” explains Thomas Selberherr (Managing Director of Selberherr GmbH).

A total of around 4,300 square metres of fire protection panels for 368 wood modules were cut to size and processed at the Selberherr plant in Schwechat. At the same time, preparations were made for the electrical tubing. This pre-fabrication enabled the individual trades to be better coordinated with each other. “It was about precision work, because everything had to interlock on site,” says Selberherr.

He relied on his long-standing partner Murexin GmbH for products for the floor laying work. The prefabricated floor panels were fully bonded together with the Parquet Adhesive X-Bond MS-K 509 Object for a two-layer construction. Subsequently, the Fixed Dispersion WL 730 was rolled up in preparation for the laying of the self-laying carpet tiles. The carpet profiles were fixed with the Special Adhesive X-Bond MS-88 Express.

All the work was aimed at ensuring a smooth transition of parliamentary business from the Parliament building to alternative accommodation and in the meantime is being held in a smaller space than Theophil Hansen’s magnificent building – again in a venerable setting.
