The Danube Tower, the highest building in Austria at 252 metres to the top of the tower, was renovated at a cost of 8.5 million EUR. It was important to the architect, Gregor Eichinger, that the clear design language and elegance of the 1960s should be retained or returned to in the modernisation of the listed building. In addition to visual innovations, there were also multimedia ones that give visitors even more insights and interactive views. For the elaborate renovation of the floors, Murexin tiling products were used, which were perfectly processed by the experienced Weinviertler master stonemason stone4you.

The professionals from stone4you laid 1 x 1 metre tiles from the manufacturer Inalco on a total floor area of 100 square metres: on the central level, installation level and on the steps in the staircases to the restaurant and café. Serpentinite stone slabs measuring 60 x 60 centimetres were laid on around 200 square metres in the foyer, in the connecting corridors and in the areas in front of the lift.

“Since large format tiles were to be used, we paid particular attention to substrate preparation. The challenge during the installation itself was that the Danube Tower naturally has many curves and thus countless cutting jobs. For example, each slab of the 57 turned steps had to be cut and several slabs on the central level also had to be cut “, Lukas Förstel (project manager, stone4you) describes the enormous amount of work involved.

In the course of the preparatory work, the existing floor was primed with Penetrating Primer LF 1after removal of the old covering and then the decoupling fleece was glued with Profiflex Maxi MB 25. The tiles were laid with Trass SFK 85 Rapid Flex Adhesive Mortar and grouted with Flexfuge Pro FX 65.
The serpentinite slabs on the ground floor were laid by stone4you’s specialists after appropriate pre-treatment of the existing screed with SFK 85 Rapid Flex Trass Adhesive Mortar and also grouted with the Pro FX 65 Flexfuge.

In addition to the refurbishment of the floors in the tower restaurant, tower café and viewing terraces, a lot has changed in the Danube Tower: the fire protection and security measures have been brought up to date and the tower now even presents itself in multimedia form: on the terraces, for example, there are interactive panorama screens that provide information about the surrounding Viennese sights in eight languages. Multiple touchscreen walls on the ground floor make the Danube Tower and the capital of Austria an interactive experience in videos and quizzes.
